When to hire a mini digger
Drainage and service trenches, footings for extensions and garden walls, ponds and pools, landscaping and driveways, and work in back gardens where a large excavator cannot get in.
Which size to choose
Compare the sizes from 1.5 to 6 t by the job and the access. The weight does not tell you the width, height or digging depth: measure the narrowest point of the access and describe the ground and the room to slew. The hire company confirms the dimensions, the buckets and whether the machine comes on a trailer or a beavertail lorry.
Frequently asked questions
How much does mini digger hire cost in Edinburgh?
As a guide, a 1.5 to 2 tonne mini digger is often around £75 to £100 a day or £300 to £350 a week before VAT. A 3 tonne machine is nearer £100 to £150 a day or £385 to £450 a week, and a 5 tonne machine around £175 a day or £550 a week. Delivery, buckets, a breaker and fuel can be extra, and an operated hire costs more than self-drive.
Can I hire a mini digger with an operator?
Yes, you can ask for operated hire. Choose that option and describe the job and the hours you expect; the hire company confirms availability and quotes for the operator. Compare the total including fuel, travel and any overtime.
How does delivery of a mini digger work?
You can ask for delivery and collection or arrange to collect it yourself, depending on the equipment and the company. Give the postcode, the access, the delivery times and how it can be unloaded. Check the price of both journeys and who loads and unloads before you accept the quote.
Do I need a licence or training to operate it?
On UK sites operators are normally expected to be trained and to hold a recognised card for the machine, such as CPCS or NPORS, or IPAF for access platforms, and the hire company may ask for proof. If you do not have one, hire it with an operator.
Is a mini digger the same as a mini excavator?
Yes. Mini digger and mini excavator are the same machine; a “360” refers to the upper body that slews all the way round. This page covers 1.5 to 6 t. Under 1 t see micro diggers; from 8 t see midi diggers and excavators.
