When to hire a midi digger
Larger groundworks on housing sites, utility trenches, roads and footings, and loading lorries, where a mini digger is too slow but a 13 t excavator is too big for the site.
Which size to choose
An 8 t machine still suits many urban sites; a 10 t machine digs and lifts more. Check access width, overhead obstructions and whether the site allows a low loader to deliver.
Frequently asked questions
How much does midi digger hire cost?
As a guide, an 8 to 9.5 tonne midi digger is often around £200 to £250 a day or £700 to £800 a week before VAT, although some depots quote less for longer hires. Transport on a plant lorry or low-loader is normally charged separately, and attachments such as a breaker, auger or grab add to the weekly cost. Ask for operated and self-drive prices if you are unsure.
Can I hire a midi digger with an operator?
Yes, you can ask for operated hire. Choose that option and describe the job and the hours you expect; the hire company confirms availability and quotes for the operator. Compare the total including fuel, travel and any overtime.
How does delivery of a midi digger work?
You can ask for delivery and collection or arrange to collect it yourself, depending on the equipment and the company. Give the postcode, the access, the delivery times and how it can be unloaded. Check the price of both journeys and who loads and unloads before you accept the quote.
Do I need a licence or training to operate it?
On UK sites operators are normally expected to be trained and to hold a recognised card for the machine, such as CPCS or NPORS, or IPAF for access platforms, and the hire company may ask for proof. If you do not have one, hire it with an operator.
